C.C. Catch (real name — Caroline Catharina Müller; born July 31, 1964, in Oss, Netherlands) is a Dutch-German singer and songwriter, and one of the most recognizable performers of European Eurodisco from the 1980s. She achieved international fame through her collaboration with German composer and producer Dieter Bohlen, who at the same time was also working with Modern Talking.
C.C. Catch’s best-known hits include «I Can Lose My Heart Tonight», «’Cause You Are Young», «Strangers by Night», «Heartbreak Hotel», «Heaven and Hell», «Soul Survivor», «House of Mystic Lights» and «Backseat of Your Cadillac». Between 1985 and 1988, Bohlen wrote and produced four of her studio albums. After their collaboration ended, the singer retained the stage name C.C. Catch and released Hear What I Say — her only original studio album recorded without Bohlen.

Childhood and move to Germany
Caroline Müller was born on July 31, 1964, in the Dutch city of Oss. In 1979, her family moved to Bünde in West Germany. There she continued her education and began training as a seamstress.
Her father, Peter Müller, supported his daughter’s musical interests. He accompanied her to competitions for young performers and later managed her career for many years.
Before beginning her professional career, Caroline took part in talent competitions and for a time used the name Carol Dean.
Optimal
In the early 1980s, Caroline Müller joined the female pop group Optimal. The quartet also included Sabine Lürenbaum, Sylvia Frötschel and Claudia Stürzenbecher. The group was produced by Peter Kent.
In 1983, Optimal released the single «Er war magnetisch», followed in 1984 by «The Good-Bye». The group appeared on German television, and her time in Optimal gave Caroline her first sustained experience on the professional pop scene.
Dieter Bohlen and the birth of C.C. Catch
In 1985, Dieter Bohlen noticed Caroline during one of Optimal’s performances. By that time, Modern Talking had already achieved major success across Europe, and Bohlen was looking for a female singer for a new project.
The stage name C.C. Catch emerged at the same time. The two Cs correspond to the names Caroline and Catharina, while Catch became the second part of the pseudonym.
Her first solo single was «I Can Lose My Heart Tonight», released on Hansa in the summer of 1985. The song reached number 13 in Germany and number 19 in Switzerland.
The recording already established the main characteristics of C.C. Catch’s early sound: synthesizer-based arrangements, a straightforward dance beat, short melodic phrases and a dense, relatively low female vocal.
Catch the Catch
In January 1986, the second single, «’Cause You Are Young», was released. It reached number nine in Germany and number eight in Switzerland. The following song, «Strangers by Night», also entered the German Top 10.
On April 28, 1986, her debut album Catch the Catch was released. Every song was written by Dieter Bohlen, who also served as producer and arranger.
The album included «’Cause You Are Young», «I Can Lose My Heart Tonight», «Strangers by Night», «You Shot a Hole in My Soul», «One Night’s Not Enough», «Jump in My Car», «Stay» and «You Can Be My Lucky Star Tonight».
Catch the Catch became C.C. Catch’s most successful album in Germany, reaching number six. It also peaked at number eight in Switzerland and number six in Norway.
In terms of production, the recordings were close to Bohlen’s other mid-1980s work, but C.C. Catch’s voice clearly distinguished the project from Modern Talking. Instead of high male vocals and falsetto parts, the focus was on a lower, fuller and slightly husky vocal timbre.
Welcome to the Heartbreak Hotel
In the second half of 1986, «Heartbreak Hotel» was released and became one of C.C. Catch’s biggest hits. In Germany, the song reached number eight and remained on the chart for sixteen weeks.
The next single was «Heaven and Hell».
In December 1986, the second studio album, Welcome to the Heartbreak Hotel, was released. In addition to its two main singles, it included «Picture Blue Eyes», «Tears Won’t Wash Away My Heartache», «Hollywood Nights», «Born on the Wind», «Stop — Draggin’ My Heart Around» and other tracks.
The music remained firmly within Eurodisco and synth-pop, although the songs featured more dramatic melodies and darker arrangements.
Like a Hurricane and «Soul Survivor»
C.C. Catch’s third studio album, Like a Hurricane, was released on October 26, 1987.
It included «Are You Man Enough», «Soul Survivor», «Midnight Gambler», «Good Guys Only Win in Movies», «Smokey Joe’s Café», «Don’t Be a Hero», «Dancing in Shadows» and the title track «Like a Hurricane».
«Are You Man Enough» reached number 20 on the German chart. «Soul Survivor» peaked at number 17 and over time became one of C.C. Catch’s most recognizable songs.
Bohlen’s production during this period was built around simple harmony, a prominent bass line, a four-on-the-floor beat and immediately recognizable choruses. C.C. Catch’s vocal delivery remained restrained: rather than elaborate vocal technique, the emphasis was on timbre, accents and her characteristic phrasing.
Diamonds and «House of Mystic Lights»
In June 1988, Diamonds: Her Greatest Hits was released. It was a compilation rather than a separate studio album: most of the release consisted of previously issued recordings supplemented with new material.
The main new song was «House of Mystic Lights», which reached number 22 in Germany.
This release is sometimes mistakenly included in C.C. Catch’s main studio discography, leading to an incorrect count of her original albums.
Big Fun and «Backseat of Your Cadillac»
In October 1988, the single «Backseat of Your Cadillac» was released. It reached number ten on the German chart and became the last C.C. Catch single from the Bohlen era to enter the German Top 10.
Her fourth studio album, Big Fun, followed in December.
It included «Backseat of Your Cadillac», «Summer Kisses», «Are You Serious», «Night in Africa», «Heartbeat City», «Baby I Need Your Love», «Little by Little», «Nothing But a Heartache», «If I Feel Love» and «Fire of Love».
Big Fun became the final original C.C. Catch studio album created entirely in collaboration with Dieter Bohlen.
Split with Dieter Bohlen
By the end of the 1980s, C.C. Catch wanted to take a more active role in creating her own material and have greater influence over the musical direction of her recordings. The model in which Bohlen had complete responsibility for songwriting and production no longer suited her.
The singer decided not to continue under the previous arrangement and left Hansa.
After their split, a dispute arose over the right to use the stage name C.C. Catch. The matter went to court, and Caroline Müller retained the right to continue performing under the pseudonym.
During 1989, Hansa continued releasing previously recorded Bohlen material, including «Nothing But a Heartache», «Summer Kisses», «Baby I Need Your Love» and «Good Guys Only Win in Movies».
Hear What I Say
After ending her collaboration with Bohlen, C.C. Catch moved to the United Kingdom and began working with a new team. Her manager became Simon Napier-Bell, known for his work with Wham!.
The first single of this new period was «Big Time». The song differed noticeably from her earlier Eurodisco material, combining dance-pop with funk and soul. In Germany, it reached number 26.
On October 30, 1989, her fifth studio album, Hear What I Say, was released.
The album involved Andy Taylor of Duran Duran and The Power Station, Dave Clayton and Jo Dworniak. C.C. Catch co-wrote seven of its songs.
The album included «Midnight Hour», «Big Time», «Love Away», «Give Me What I Want», «I’m Gonna Miss You», «Backgirl», «Can’t Catch Me», «Hear What I Say», «Nothing’s Gonna Change Our Love» and «Feels Like Heaven».
Funk, soul and elements of new jack swing appeared in the music. The electronic foundation and dance rhythm remained, but the song structures and vocal arrangements changed considerably.
Hear What I Say reached number 75 on the German album chart. It remains C.C. Catch’s last full album of entirely new studio material.
Career break
After Hear What I Say, the singer sharply reduced her studio activity.
Virtually her entire core catalog of original albums had been recorded within just four years, from 1986 to 1989. No new full-length studio albums followed during the 1990s.
Meanwhile, Hansa and Ariola continued to release compilations, remixes and reissues of her 1980s material.
Best of ’98
In 1998, C.C. Catch returned with the project Best of ’98.
The release was a collection of earlier hits featuring several reworked versions. New vocal and rap versions of «I Can Lose My Heart Tonight» and «Soul Survivor» were recorded with Krayzee.
Dieter Bohlen once again served as producer and arranger, with Luis Rodríguez as co-producer.
«C.C. Catch Megamix ’98» reached number 33 on the German chart.
The comeback did not lead to a new studio album, and her later discography developed mainly through individual singles, new versions of older songs and compilations.
New songs in the 2000s
In 2003, C.C. Catch released «Shake Your Head 2003», a new version of the Was (Not Was) song.
In 2004, she appeared on the German television show Comeback — Die große Chance.
In November of the same year, the single «Silence», featuring Leela, was released. The recording placed more emphasis on guitar, an unusual element compared with the singer’s classic Eurodisco catalog.
In 2010, she released «Unborn Love», recorded with Spanish producer Juan Martinez.
Duet with Chris Norman
In 2014, C.C. Catch recorded «Another Night in Nashville» with former Smokie vocalist Chris Norman.
The song was performed in a pop and country-rock style and differed considerably from the material with which she had been associated in the 1980s.
«Heal Me»
In April 2024, the singer’s father, Peter Müller, who had remained her manager for many years, died.
On July 31, 2024, her 60th birthday, C.C. Catch released «Heal Me», dedicated to his memory.
The recording was produced by Luis Rodríguez. The song retained an electronic dance foundation and elements that recalled the classic C.C. Catch sound, while being conceived as a contemporary standalone release.
40 years of «I Can Lose My Heart Tonight»
In 2025, C.C. Catch’s first solo single celebrated its 40th anniversary.
On July 25, Warner Music Central Europe released I Can Lose My Heart Tonight — 40th Anniversary 2025 Remaster. The remastering was carried out by Blank & Jones.
The limited edition was issued on transparent blue 12-inch vinyl in a run of 1,000 copies. It included the Extended Club Remix, instrumental, single and playback versions of the song.
In 2026, C.C. Catch continued performing live, focusing primarily on her classic 1980s repertoire.
C.C. Catch’s musical style
The core C.C. Catch catalog belongs primarily to Eurodisco, Europop, synth-pop and dance-pop.
She is also frequently associated with Italo disco, although her classic recordings from 1985–1988 were created primarily within the West German pop industry and Dieter Bohlen’s production school.
The sound was built around programmed dance rhythms, synthesizer bass, bright keyboard melodies, compact verses and strongly emphasized choruses. Maxi versions usually featured longer introductions and extended instrumental passages intended for club play.
C.C. Catch’s main vocal characteristic is her comparatively low and full timbre. She rarely relied on elaborate melisma or showy high-register parts; instead, her distinctive sound came from rhythmic delivery, short phrases and a slightly husky vocal tone.
