Mariah Carey (born March 27, 1969, in Huntington, New York, USA) — is an American singer, songwriter, record producer and actress. One of the most successful performers in the history of American pop music, she combines pop, R&B, soul, gospel and hip-hop. Mariah Carey’s vocal style is known for its wide range, extensive use of melisma and her distinctive whistle register.
Mariah Carey has scored 19 No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 — a record among solo artists. Her best-known songs include «Vision of Love», «Emotions», «Dreamlover», «Hero», «Without You», «Fantasy», «One Sweet Day», «Always Be My Baby», «Honey», «My All», «Heartbreaker», «We Belong Together», «Touch My Body», «Obsessed» and «All I Want for Christmas Is You».
Mariah Carey wrote or co-wrote the overwhelming majority of her own hits. She was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2022. Over the course of her career, she has won five Grammy Awards, while worldwide sales of her recordings are estimated at more than 200 million copies.
By 2026, Mariah Carey’s studio discography includes sixteen albums. The most recent, Here for It All, was released in September 2025 after a seven-year gap between new studio albums.
Childhood on Long Island
Mariah Carey was born in Huntington on Long Island and was the youngest of three children.
Her mother, Patricia Hickey, was an opera singer and vocal coach of Irish descent. Her father, Alfred Roy Carey, worked as an aeronautical engineer and had African American and Venezuelan ancestry.
Her parents were in an interracial marriage at a time when such families in the United States regularly faced discrimination and open hostility. Mariah Carey later spoke about racist attacks experienced by the family.
Her parents divorced when the future singer was about three years old. She spent most of her childhood with her mother.
Her musical abilities emerged very early. As a child, Mariah Carey tried to imitate her mother’s operatic phrases, although Patricia Hickey did not try to turn her daughter into a classical singer. She helped her learn the basics of breathing and vocal technique.
Mariah Carey later emphasized that she did not receive full academic vocal training: much of her technique and style developed independently.
First Songs
As a teenager, Mariah Carey was far more interested in contemporary pop, R&B, soul and hip-hop than in opera.
She attended Harborfields High School in Greenlawn on Long Island and was already seriously writing her own songs by that time.
One of her first important collaborators was keyboardist Ben Margulies. Together they wrote early versions of songs that later appeared on her debut album.
After graduating from high school in 1987, Mariah Carey moved to Manhattan. She worked as a waitress, briefly studied cosmetology, continued writing music and recorded demos.
Brenda K. Starr and Columbia Records
In the late 1980s, Mariah Carey worked as a backing vocalist for singer Brenda K. Starr.
In December 1988, the two attended a music industry event together. Mariah Carey brought a cassette containing her demos, which eventually reached Columbia Records executive Tommy Mottola.
Tommy Mottola listened to the tape after the event and tried to find the young singer. Soon afterward, Columbia Records offered her a contract.
By the time she signed the deal, Mariah Carey was already more than just a vocalist: much of the material for her future debut album was based on songs she had written with Ben Margulies.
Mariah Carey
On June 12, 1990, Mariah Carey released her debut studio album, Mariah Carey.
The first single was «Vision of Love». It introduced a mass audience to Mariah Carey’s characteristic vocal style — melisma, rapid transitions between registers and extremely high notes.
«Vision of Love» topped the Billboard Hot 100.
It was followed by «Love Takes Time», «Someday» and «I Don’t Wanna Cry». All four of the album’s first singles reached No. 1 in the United States.
The album itself also reached the top of the Billboard 200 and remained there for eleven weeks.
In 1991, Mariah Carey won her first two Grammy Awards — Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for «Vision of Love».
Emotions
In September 1991, Mariah Carey released her second studio album, Emotions.
The title track became her fifth consecutive U.S. single to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. As a result, the first five official singles of her career all topped the American chart in succession.
Emotions placed greater emphasis on soul, gospel and club music. Mariah Carey also became more actively involved in producing her own material.
Other notable songs included «Can’t Let Go» and «Make It Happen». The latter reflected on the period before her Columbia Records contract, when she was trying to establish herself independently in New York.
MTV Unplugged
During the early years of her career, Mariah Carey toured relatively rarely, which led some critics to question whether she could reproduce her demanding studio vocal performances live.
In March 1992, she recorded a concert for MTV Unplugged.
One of the key performances was a cover of «I’ll Be There» by The Jackson 5. Following the television broadcast, the recording was released as a single and also reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The live EP MTV Unplugged became one of the key early recordings in Mariah Carey’s career.
Music Box
On August 31, 1993, Mariah Carey released her third studio album, Music Box.
Compared with Emotions, the album was much more strongly oriented toward an international pop audience.
The main singles were «Dreamlover» and «Hero». «Dreamlover» spent eight weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, while «Hero» became one of the defining ballads of her concert repertoire.
Her version of «Without You», previously recorded by Badfinger and Harry Nilsson, also became a major international success. It did not reach No. 1 in the United States, but topped the charts in several European countries.
Music Box became one of the most commercially successful albums in Mariah Carey’s discography.
Marriage to Tommy Mottola
In June 1993, Mariah Carey married Sony Music executive Tommy Mottola.
Their relationship was both personal and professional: Tommy Mottola had played a key role in launching her career and remained one of the most influential executives at her record company.
Mariah Carey later described the marriage as extremely controlling and spoke about feeling isolated.
By the mid-1990s, her desire for greater creative and personal independence had also begun to appear in her music.
Merry Christmas and «All I Want for Christmas Is You»
On November 1, 1994, Mariah Carey released her first Christmas album, Merry Christmas.
Alongside traditional holiday songs, the album featured the new composition «All I Want for Christmas Is You», written by Mariah Carey with Walter Afanasieff.
At the time of release, the song was one of the album’s singles, but with the growth of digital music and streaming, it began returning to charts around the world every November and December.
In December 2019, 25 years after its original release, «All I Want for Christmas Is You» reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time.

Daydream
On October 3, 1995, Mariah Carey released Daydream.
The album retained the large pop ballads of the previous period while moving Mariah Carey’s sound closer to contemporary R&B and hip-hop.
The first single, «Fantasy», debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
«Fantasy (Bad Boy Remix)», featuring Ol’ Dirty Bastard, became especially significant. For a major pop star in the mid-1990s, integrating a rapper into a fully reworked alternative version of a hit single was still not a standard industry formula.
«One Sweet Day»
The second single from Daydream was «One Sweet Day», recorded with Boyz II Men.
The ballad is dedicated to the loss of a loved one.
The song spent 16 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and set a record for the longest stay at the top of the U.S. chart, a record that remained in place for more than two decades.
Another No. 1 single from the album was «Always Be My Baby».
Butterfly
On September 16, 1997, Mariah Carey released Butterfly.
The influence of contemporary R&B and hip-hop became much stronger on this album. The arrangements featured more slow beats, samples and urban production.
The first single, «Honey», debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
It was followed by «Butterfly», «Breakdown», «The Roof (Back in Time)» and «My All». The latter became another U.S. No. 1.
«The Roof» incorporates elements of Mobb Deep’s «Shook Ones, Pt. II» and became one of the clearest examples of the more atmospheric R&B sound of this period.
Divorce and Creative Independence
Butterfly was created while Mariah Carey’s marriage to Tommy Mottola was breaking down.
The couple separated in 1997, and their divorce was finalized in 1998.
After the separation, Mariah Carey gained greater control over her stage image, musical collaborators and music videos.
As a result, Butterfly became not only a musical turning point, but also an important shift in the structure of her career.
#1’s and «When You Believe»
In November 1998, Mariah Carey released the compilation #1’s, which brought together her U.S. No. 1 singles.

Virgin Records and Glitter
In 2001, Mariah Carey signed with Virgin Records.

The first single was «Loverboy».

On April 12, 2005, Mariah Carey released her tenth studio album, The Emancipation of Mimi.

Why Mimi
«Mimi» is a family nickname for Mariah Carey that was originally used only by a small circle of people close to her.

E=MC²
In April 2008, Mariah Carey released E=MC².
The first single, «Touch My Body», became Mariah Carey’s eighteenth No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
With that achievement, she surpassed Elvis Presley for the most U.S. No. 1 singles among solo artists.

While working on the music video for «Bye Bye», Mariah Carey became closer to actor and television host Nick Cannon.
They married in the Bahamas on April 30, 2008.

Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel
On September 29, 2009, Mariah Carey released Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel.
Much of the material was created with producers Tricky Stewart and The-Dream.
The first single was «Obsessed» — one of Mariah Carey’s best-known songs from the late 2000s.
The album also included «H.A.T.E.U.», «Up Out My Face», «Angels Cry» and a cover of Foreigner’s «I Want to Know What Love Is».

Precious
In 2009, Mariah Carey played social worker Mrs. Weiss in the drama Precious, directed by Lee Daniels.
For the role, the singer deliberately abandoned her usual glamorous screen image.
Her performance received positive reviews and became the most notable dramatic role of her acting career.
Mariah Carey later worked with Lee Daniels again in the film The Butler.
Merry Christmas II You
In November 2010, Mariah Carey released her second Christmas album, Merry Christmas II You.
Alongside holiday standards, the album included the new song «Oh Santa!».

American Idol and «#Beautiful»
In 2012, Mariah Carey became a judge on the twelfth season of American Idol.

Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse
On May 27, 2014, Mariah Carey released Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse.
The title referred to a childhood self-portrait on which Mariah Carey had labeled herself «The Elusive Chanteuse».
In addition to «#Beautiful», the album included «You’re Mine (Eternal)», «Thirsty», «Cry.», «Faded» and other songs.
Commercially, the album did not match her biggest releases, but it continued her work within contemporary R&B.
#1 to Infinity and Las Vegas
In 2015, Mariah Carey began her first Las Vegas residency, #1 to Infinity.
The show was built around her U.S. No. 1 singles.
At the same time, the compilation #1 to Infinity was released with the new song «Infinity».

Caution
On November 16, 2018, Mariah Carey released her fifteenth studio album, Caution.

Caution is rooted in modern minimalist R&B and differs noticeably from the large-scale pop ballads of her early career.
The New Life of «All I Want for Christmas Is You»

In September 2020, Mariah Carey published the memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey, written with Michaela Angela Davis.
In the book, Mariah Carey discussed her childhood, interracial family, relationships with relatives, early years in the music industry, marriage to Tommy Mottola, the Glitter period and her own perspective on her public image.
The memoir allowed her to present in her own words events that for many years had largely been discussed through the press and tabloids.
The Rarities and MC30
In 2020, the 30th anniversary of her debut album was marked with the MC30 project.
Rare remixes, B-sides, live recordings and other archival material began appearing digitally.
On October 2, the compilation The Rarities was released, featuring recordings from 1990–2020 as well as Mariah Carey’s 1996 Tokyo Dome concert.
One notable archival discovery was an early version of «Out Here on My Own» from the film Fame.
Someone’s Ugly Daughter
In her memoir, Mariah Carey also revealed details about a little-known rock project from the mid-1990s.
While recording Daydream in 1995, she simultaneously participated in the creation of the alternative rock album Someone’s Ugly Daughter by the band Chick.
Mariah Carey helped write the material and recorded vocal parts, although the commercially released version featured mostly vocals by Clarissa Dane.
The project remained an almost unknown part of her discography for many years.

Here for It All
On September 26, 2025, Mariah Carey released her sixteenth studio album, Here for It All — her first new studio album since Caution.

MusiCares Person of the Year
On January 30, 2026, Mariah Carey was honored as MusiCares Person of the Year.
